Registration
- How many students can be on a team?
- Each team will consist of up to eight students.
- What should I do if I do not have enough people to form a complete team?
- On the registration form, there will be a space where you can express your preference to be
paired with other incomplete teams; we will do our best to match as many partial teams that sign up
as we can. Alternatively, you may choose to take the team tests with an incomplete team of fewer
than eight people.
- Can students who are not yet in the 9th grade compete?
- Yes. Any student who feels ready to compete is welcome to
participate.
- Can I participate in SMT remotely?
- No. All participants in SMT must come to Stanford on the day of the contest. Problems and
solutions will be posted online shortly after the conclusion of the contest.
- Do students on the same team have to be from the same school?
- No. Traditionally, the majority of SMT teams have been comprised of students from the same
school, but this is not required.
- How many teams can my school bring to SMT?
- There is no limit on how many teams a school can bring to SMT.
- Do we need to have a teacher or coach attend SMT in person?
- No, you are not required to have a teacher or coach at the tournament.
- Can international teams come to SMT?
- Yes. If you need visas to enter the United States, we can provide official invitation letters
upon request.
Testing
- Are calculators allowed?
- No calculators are allowed on any portion of the tests.
- Can I take only the individual tests?
- Yes, you may; just indicate so on the registration form. However, this
means that you will not be eligible for any of the team prizes.
- How hard are the tests?
- Look at SMT tests from previous years to see the typical difficulty of
the SMT tests. Keep in mind that the SMT 2011 tests were more difficult than
usual.
Other
- Can we purchase SMT shirts?
- SMT shirts can be ordered online in the registration form. Note that
all shirt orders must be received by the registration deadline.
- Will lunch be provided?
- You can order pizzas when you register; see the online registration
form.
- How do I get to the tournament location?
- The tournament will be located mainly in the Math Building (Building 380 in the Main Quad),
and the awards ceremony will be in Hewlett Teaching Center (just west of the Math Building). As the
tournament date approaches, we will send an email with campus maps and directions to all registered teams. Information
on maps, parking, transit, and lodging
is available.
