The Stanford Math Tournament (SMT) is an annual student-run math competition for high school students held at Stanford University. SMT aims to encourage interest in math by providing students an opportunity to work on fun and challenging problems and to meet other students interested in math. The tournament brings together students from around the country, and even across the world, for a day of interesting problems and mathematical fellowship. SMT is run by Stanford students in collaboration with Rice University, Johns Hopkins University, Iowa State University, and the University of Iowa.
For detailed information about the tournament, see our rules page and our answers to frequently asked questions.
The first Stanford Math Tournament was held in 1999 in conjunction with the Harvard-MIT Math Tournament. The format of the contest is based on the Rice Math Tournament, which has been running since 1981.
We highly value your feedback on SMT. Your comments and suggestions are very important in helping us improve the tournament. If you have any feedback, please fill out our feedback survey for SMT 2013, or email us at stanford.math.tournament@gmail.com.
The solutions to the tests are mostly correct, but by no means perfect. If you find an undiscovered error or a significantly more elegant solution, we would be happy to fix the error or publish the new solution, with acknowledgement. Please email us at stanford.math.tournament@gmail.com.
