Dear Mathematics Director,

The Stanford University Mathematical Organization is pleased to invite you to the 2000 Stanford Math Tournament, to be held on Saturday, February 26 in the math department. This contest brings together students from the greater Bay Area for a day of challenging problems and mathematical fellowship. The tournament is run by Stanford students in collaboration with the Harvard-MIT Math Tournament and the Rice Math Tournament, which will be held simultaneously in other parts of the country.

The tournament is composed of four subject area tests (Algebra, Geometry, Advanced Topics, and Calculus), a general test, and a team test.

Here is a tentative schedule for the contest:

8:30 - 9:20 Team Registration
9:30 - 10:30 Algebra
Advanced Topics
General Test (ends at 11:30)
10:45 - 11:45 Geometry
Calculus
12:00 - 1:15 Lunch
1:30 - 3:00 Team
3:30 - 4:30 Awards Ceremony

Solutions for all events will be issued at the end of the contest. There will also be team awards based on overall performance on the various tests. In this calculation, the general test is worth slightly less than two subject area tests.

Even if you do not have enough students for a full team, any number of students are welcome to participate as individuals or in small groups; they will be grouped together for the team round.

You may register online or send the information on the form to
